For a more full fledged (but still relatively light) panel, xfce4-panel is a good alternative. xfce4-panel supports Gnome applets, and will thus allow for using the Gnome NetworkManager applet nm-applet. xfce4-panel has a pager, tray, clock in addition to a wide variety of other panel plugins.
